The Global Hand washing Day is internationally designated and is marked every year on the 15th of October. It is a day to reiterate the call for improved hand washing practices among people of all walks of life. The main objectives of this global celebration are to foster and support a global and local culture of handwashing with soap, evaluate the state of handwashing in each country and raise awareness about the benefits of handwashing with soap.
In July this year Kenya was awarded during the African Sanitation and Hygiene Conference 3, in Kigali, Rwanda as an outstanding nation for having brought the largest number of children to wash hands simultaneously in one site, the effort also earned the country a place in the Guinness book of records.
Following the same spirit, this year in Kenya, the global handwashing day was being marked differently with a call of action for mayors and chairmen of local authorities; this is in recognition of the important role the local authorities play in sanitation and hygiene.
The municipal councils are responsible for ensuring access to both safe and hygienic sanitation facilities both in terms of infrastructure and education. Leaders and decision makers at the municipal level need to make a deliberate effort to promote proper hygiene practices such as hand washing. This will help upscale the automatic handwashing behavior to all in the community.
